Dr. Maria Grazia Piancino is a researcher and Aggregate Professor in Orthognathodontics at University of Turin, Italy. She along with Dr. Stephanos Kyrkanides, Dean, University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA, has brought the first book of its type “Understanding Masticatory Function in Unilateral Crossbites.” Authors have studied the malocclusion from a gnathological viewpoint both in terms of diagnosis as well as treatment. The authoritative nature of the text is very evident from its composition and conforms to the vast knowledge and experience of the authors. The authors have emphasized the tenets of masticatory function and associated dentofacial and skeletal dysfunction in detail. The clinical attributes of masticatory function in unilateral crossbites enlighten us to understand the muscular Ingram in a better way before planning for orthodontic treatment.

This book is a compilation of lecture notes for courses to students at the postgraduate scholar of orthognathodontics; and the degree course in prosthodontics at University of Turin, Italy, over a period of more than 20 years. The text provides adequate information regarding the evolution of electromyography and electrognathology and their application in contemporary research and practice, thus facilitating the readers to understand the changing concepts and theory behind such diagnostic aids. The book highlights information from functional magnetic resonance imaging studies and paves the way for future studies using high-end technology.

This book is first of its kind on such a least understood topic, which is a welcome step and for this, authors should be applauded. However, for a beginner, the contents of the book might look little complicated at the outset. A basic understanding of the masticatory function is deemed essential before assimilating the knowledge disposed in the book. The gnathological principles are not adequately stressed in the orthodontic postgraduate curriculum worldwide, and this book might make headway in the coming years. The focus areas of the book are as follows:

  1. Introductory explanation of masticatory function

  2. Physiology of mastication: The chewing pattern and masticatory function

  3. Physiology of mastication: Neuromuscular control of the masticatory function.

This title is a must read and reference book for orthodontists, prosthodontists, and physiologists with interest in stomatognathic system. We hope that this book will act as a pivot for present and future research and practice.
